And now for something completely different... discussion about a possible Final Fantasy VII remake. Well, I guess that’s not really completely different, now is it?
How much is too much? I'm really excited about the FFIII remake and love the fact that the game is being completely remade. I want the characters to have names, personalities and all that good stuff. I want the story to have more depth, but that got me thinking. How much is too much when it comes to remaking games? People don't seem to have a problem with FFIII getting the full remake treatment since there has never been an official US release of it here. At the same time, some people were not happy the FFIV Advance had a different sound clip for the Bio/Virus spell.
Now imagine the FFVII remake that so many fans of the game want made. Do people want the exact same game with just a graphical upgrade and voice acting? Why would SE spend their time and money making the exact same game with new graphics and voice acting? Well, because people want it, that's why. I don't know, but I just can't get excited over the exact same game with only aesthetic improvements. I want more than just a graphical upgrade and while voice acting is great, that's still not enough. Those updates alone would be nothing more than a PS3 port of the game, not a remake. I want new dungeons, additional playable characters, greater character development for Red XIII, Yuffie, and Cid. I want to be able to revive Aeris... well, that may be going a little too far, but still I want more than just a prettier look. Maybe they could add Advent Children as a playable epilogue. Ok, now I know I've gone too far. Still, is that all that people want in the remake, a graphical upgrade and voice acting? How can that be enough?
Let's continue the dream for a second and imagine Square Enix decides to give FFVII a complete remake. How much is too much change? After all, they would be changing the classic that is FFVII. That would be bordering on sacrilege for some. If people freaked over Bio/Virus in FFIV Advance, just imagine what people could get angry about when SE starts reworking FFVII. You could have translation changes, spell renaming, bad voice acting, and story tweaks just to name a few. Considering that many believe that Final Fantasy VII is Final Fantasy, SE could have some angry fans on their hands. I don't know if SE is really brave enough to rewrite the Gospel of Cloud. If they do, they need to be careful. Giving the fans what they want might just be one of the most dangerous tasks that Square Enix undertakes.
