I wonder at times why it's only now that I'm discovering dungeon crawlers. In truth it's probably just a matter of convenience. I never had a good computer growing up and thereby little access to the American RPGs that have generally defined the genre. Contrast this with now where we are seeing that particular style of gaming make a miniature resurgence on handhelds like the DS.

I find it a wholly addictive kind of RPG. It's the little things. I've always been one for grandiose stories of characters in epic circumstances, but I have lately found myself enjoying the more down to Earth, “lets explore a cave and find some treasure,” motives of the often cardboard characters of the games I'm playing now. Not to mention the sheer addictive qualities of the gameplay itself.

There must be some mystical force behind these games, because I just cannot seem to put them down. I just want to push a little further into the dungeon, find out what creature or treasure awaits me behind the next turn in the road. Before I eventually sold Etrian Odyssey -the complete lack of a story threw me I admit, though I think now I might have made a mistake- I fell very much into the “just one more space” syndrome.

So as I play my way through Mazes of Fate and eye Orcs and Elves for a second play through, I can only hope that more games of this sort are on the horizon. I missed out on dungeon crawlers in the past, I'd love to experience them now.
